8 March 2013 - Oxford - "National Parliaments and scrutiny of EU decision-making: The Lords' Way"
The European Movement is holding an event in Oxford to discuss how national parliaments can make a constructive contribution to EU decision-making.
The democratic accountability of the EU has been an issue of contention for a while. The directly elected European Parliament has seen its role as co-legislator enhanced since the Lisbon Treaty came in to force, improving the link between the EU and its citizens. But many argue that national parliaments should play a more active role in shaping and scrutinising EU laws.
Lord Boswell (Conservative MP for Daventry 1987-2010) is Chairman of the House of Lords EU Select Committee whose six specialist sub-committees scrutinise EU proposals and produce reports on diverse EU-related subjects including freshwater resources, a Financial Transactions Tax, Eurozone governance and the Indian Ocean anti-piracy initiative among others.
Lord Boswell will discuss how the House of Lords model of scrutinising EU legislation contributes in the democratic accountability of the EU decision making process.
Date and Time: Friday 8 March, 7.30 to 9.00 p.m
Venue: Maison Francaise, 2-10 Norham road, Oxford OX2 6SE

With a referendum looking more likely the EU debate is set to rage on for the foreseeable future. But before we ask the question of 'yes or no', 'in or out', shouldn't we be asking what the role of the EU should be in an increasingly uncertain world?
