2.00pm - 5.30pm, followed by a drinks reception. London Metropolitan University, 31 Jewry Street, London EC3.
Political parties are in a crisis of membership in many European countries, just at a time when European political parties are trying to establish themselves. What is the future for political parties in Europe? Can European political parties seize the chance to define a new kind of party that is better suited to contemporary forms of political engagement which often take place outside 'formal' political institutions, and what new means of participation can they define? What are the possibilities opened up by the Lisbon Treaty now that it is in force?
Speakers Andrew Duff (MEP), John Palmer (European Policy Centre), Henning Meyer (Global Policy Institute), and the Federal Trust's Director Brendan Donnelly will attempt to provide some answers and invite your questions. This conference is part of the European Alternatives 'Future of Representation' series, in partnership with the Federal Trust and supported by the European Parliament.

A working party from the Federal Trust, headed by Sir Brian Unwin, formerly President of the European Investment Bank, and Graham Bishop, the leading technical analyst of European financial affairs, has been examining these initiatives, particularly those of the European Union. The resulting report was launched at this event by the authors and invited commentators.

Fiona Hyslop is of course an experienced politician with a longstanding interest in European affairs, and it will be interesting to hear her views on how government policies on Europe are likely to develop through 2010 and into a Holyrood election year. The Cottier Theatre's upstairs restaurant provides an ideal combination of good food and cosy atmosphere to encourage informal discussion, so this should be another memorable evening.

We hear a lot about about the "democratic deficit" in Europe. Now the Foreign Policy Centre and the European Commission Representation in the UK are holding a series of seminars around the country to examine public awareness and attitudes towards the European Parliament, assess the problems that it faces and explore some possible solutions.
This topic is absolutely central to everything the European Movement is about: if we don't care about connecting the European Parliament and the people of Europe, what are we for? It would be encouraging to see a really good turnout of members at the Parliament on 29 January!

14 January 2010 - Edinburgh - The year ahead in Europe
The European Movement in Scotland and the Edinburgh University European Society are jointly organising a meeting on the "Year ahead in Europe" on 14th January 2010, from 6pm to 7.30pm, at the Lecture Theatre 175, Old Squad, University of Edinburgh.
The speakers are Donald Henderson, Scottish Government EU Director and Head of the Scottish Government EU Office in Brussels, and Mike Shackleton, Head of the European Parliament Office in the UK.
We are very fortunate to have enticed Donald and Mike to come and speak to us during short visits to Edinburgh. Their roles give them excellent vantage points to analyse and comment on developments as they unfold in Brussels - but how will they be at predicting the future? At this event they will talk about the main themes and developments on the Brussels agenda for 2010. What practical differences will the Lisbon Treaty really make? How might the results of the UK General Election affect attitudes to (and in) Brussels? This joint meeting with the University European Society gave rise to lively discussion in January this year - especially in the post-meeting follow-up over a glass of wine.
Members £3, students £1, non-members £5
