Press release from the European Movement
Close links with the EU mean close links with the US
22 October 2009
The European Movement echoes the US administration’s reported concerns that Tory attitudes towards the EU will compromise Britain’s standing vis-ŕ-vis its European partners, and have a negative effect on the UK’s relationship with the US.
Charles Kennedy MP, President of the European Movement, said, ‘It was only a matter of time before our American friends realised the consequences of Tory attitudes towards the EU. The Obama administration favours closer European integration and they want to see the UK as closely involved as possible in EU policy making. Which is exactly what the European Movement wants to see from every British Government.’
The European Movement invites the current Government as well as all future governments to actively engage themselves with policy-making in the EU. The European Union is the right framework for tackling challenges like climate change, global financial regulation, immigration and security and it is imperative for Britain to be an involved partner, at the centre of the EU decision-making process, rather than a reluctant by-stander.
